Castle Stories

Over the centuries, British Castles have accumulated a rich and colourful history. This site brings you photos and information about hundreds of castles from around Britain. The descriptions include stories about the castles, the people, battles, murders and betrayals, ghosts and other strange happenings.

This site is not just a dry history of names and dates. The history is brought alive with hundreds of photos - every castle is illustrated with photos (usually more than one) and interactive maps.

Navigating the Site

When you have a site with hundreds of pages it is important to make it easy to navigate. With this in mind we give you several ways of navigating the site.

• When you know the name of the castle you are looking for, the easiest way to find the castle is to use the "Complete A-Z Lists" for Scotland, England or Wales.
• When you want to browse castles in a particular area, the best options are to use the "Castles by Region" section of the menu, or the Google Map Explorer. The Google Map Explorer is a fantastic tool for planning a tour of castles on your holiday. The map includes markers for every castle (all on the oe map) with pop up information windows on every map marker.
• When you just want to get a feel for what is in the site, the Thumbnail Gallery is a great place to start (but only if you are using broadband).
• When you have some other piece of information, then the "Search" box at the top does a complete search of the site. This would be perfect for looking up the names of people and places associated with the castles.

Touring Information

• Click the [+] button a few times to zoom in on the Google Satellite image of the castle. This works great in areas where Google has high resolution satellite images.
• If you want a street map, click on the [Map] button at the top of the map. This will switch to the normal Google street map view.
