This is the central 'keep' of the 'new castle', built between 1172 and 1177ad by Henry 2nd ( at a cost of £911 10 shillings and 9 pence) to replace the earth and timber fortress built on the same site by Robert Curthose, the son of William the Conqueror in the aftermath of the Norman Invasion of England in 1066. It is, of course, the building which gives this city its name.
