Location
Llandovery, Carmarthenshire
Description
Llandovery Castle is situated in the town of Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It was a motte and bailey castle with a D-shaped tower and a twin towered gatehouse with a curtain wall. The castle is now in ruins. It is set on a hilltop overlooking the River Brān near the Castle Hotel, and can be accessed through the Hotel yard.
History
The Normans began construction of Llandovery Castle in 1116. Soon after it was attacked and partially destroyed by Welsh forces under Gruffydd ap Rhys. The castle remained in Norman hands until 1158, when it was captured by the Welsh under Rhys ap Gruffydd. The castle changed hands several times, eventually falling to the English under Edward I in 1277. During the Owain Glynd?r rebellion in 1403 it was attacked and partially destroyed. The castle fell into disrepair and was never rebuilt.
