This is actually "Leicester's Gatehouse". It was built 500 years after the rest of the castle by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, in order to impress Elizabeth. It is an unsympathetic contrast with the Norman keep.

KENILWORTH CASTLE FACTS
|
Location Kenilworth, Warwickshire
History The original castle was a wooden motte & bailey structure, subsequently rebuilt in red sandstone with a large keep in the mid 12th century and strengthened in the 13th century. After the end of the English Civil War in 1649, Oliver Cromwell's parliamentarian troops "slighted" the stronghold. They destroyed the north wall and the whole castle was then allowed to decay to the ruins seen today.
